Disney’s BAFTA & Academy-Award nominated Big Hero 6 opened to the number one spot at the UK box office this weekend over the anticipated KINGSMAN: THE SECRET SERVICE, which also debuted last week. Big Hero 6 took an estimated £4.29 million during its opening weekend including early previews; and has now taken a massive $484 million globally.

Big Hero 6 is the latest blockbuster from Walt Disney Studios Animation following the phenomenal performance of last year’s Frozen – currently the biggest animation of all time.

Big Hero 6, which hit cinemas on Friday, is inspired by the Marvel comics of the same name, featuring stand out comic-book style action and starring the adorable inflatable robot Baymax. The film has received widespread audience and critical acclaim with glowing global reviews following its world premiere at the Tokyo Film Festival and #1 US launch.

With all the heart and humour audiences expect from Walt Disney Animation Studios, Big Hero 6 is an action-packed comedy-adventure about robotics prodigy Hiro Hamada, who learns to harness his genius—thanks to his brilliant brother Tadashi and their like-minded friends: adrenaline junkie Go Go Tomago, neatnik Wasabi, chemistry whiz Honey Lemon and fanboy Fred.

When a devastating turn of events catapults them into the midst of a dangerous plot unfolding in the streets of San Fransokyo, Hiro turns to his closest companion—a robot named Baymax—and transforms the group into a band of high-tech heroes determined to solve the mystery.

Inspired by the Marvel comics of the same name, and featuring comic-book style action, Big Hero 6 is directed by Don Hall (“Winnie the Pooh”) and Chris Williams (“Bolt”), and produced by Roy Conli (“Tangled”). The film hit UK cinemas in 3D on January 30 2015.

Additionally the fun and innovative new Big Hero 6 product line, which includes toys, stationery and accessories, is also flying off the shelves, with Disney Store best sellers including the Baymax Soft Toy, Deluxe Figure Set and Pin Set. In addition, Disney Infinity Big Hero 6 characters, Baymax and Hiro, are now available and have fast become strong members of the Disney Infinity line-up. Using Hiro’s mind-power and Baymax’s super strength, fans will be able to create all new adventures in the Disney Infinity 2.0 Toy Box

Big Hero 6 is out now in UK & Ireland cinemas.
