Today sees a landmark moment in the rise of the next great indie-rock hopes The Cases as they release their debut EP ‘Mr Penny’ via This Feeling Records in partnership with LAB Records. Recent weeks have been packed full of highlights for the young Preston band, including a sold-out UK headline tour, strong airplay support from John Kennedy on Radio X as well as Amazing Radio, and attention-grabbing festival dates including The Great Escape and This Feeling By The Sea at the iconic Bridlington Spa.
After the singles ‘Mr Penny’ and ‘The Curse’ proved that The Cases excel at fusing super addictive hooks with the effervescent energy of youth, the rest of the EP shows that they were no fluke. The new focus track ‘She Said’ accelerates with a full-throttle blur of effervescent melody that touches on pop-punk. The concluding song ‘Romantic’ steps confidently into introspective acoustic territory before a searing, dramatic finale ends the set on a high.
Unusually for a debut project, the EP tells a full, linear story from start-to-finish – a narrative of the rush, naivety, heartbreak and renewed hope that comes with young love. It takes us from the misguided optimism of ‘Mr Penny’ into feeling down and then defiant with ‘The Curse’ and then realising that promises were always going to be broken with ‘She Said’. ‘Romantic’ is the what-might’ve-been tearjerker with a twist – you’re now free to find someone new and try again from scratch.
As bassist James Maher explains, ““The whole thing tells a story of the different ways that people take a breakup. We had all been through break-ups when we wrote it, so we felt those emotions: being upset, being angry, then realising nothing’s that deep because we’re still young.”
All four songs were written by The Cases, completed by Harry Hornsby (vocals, rhythm guitar), Will Bullen (lead guitar) and Matt Barren (drums). The EP was produced by Chris Taylor (The Lathums, Blossoms, Courteeners).
‘Mr Penny’ EP is now available to stream, with a limited pressing black vinyl coming soon. Sure to be highly collectible as The Cases’ rise accelerates, the vinyl is available to pre-order.
