Ben Cooper, Controller, Radio 1 and 1Xtra, today announced plans for an exciting Sunday afternoon show that will be dedicated to Number 1s and to breaking new pop music – hosted by new Radio 1 signing, 19 year old Cel Spellman.

Kicking off at 4pm on Sunday 19th July, the first two hours of the show will be devoted to new pop music, plus the week’s best content from Radio 1, CBBC and online. From 6-7pm, Cel will host The Number 1 Show – where every song will be a Number 1 – whether it’s the week’s Official Number 1 streamed track, rock track or music video. During the hour, in partnership with the Official Charts Company, Cel will recap on Friday’s top ten and play the current Number 1 single, before taking a first look at the predictions for new entries in the following week’s Official Chart. The Number 1 Show will also look at what is ‘must see’ at the cinema and the latest ‘must play’ games. By listening to this new three-hour show, young listeners will have an essential guide to the week ahead before they return to school.

Radio 1 and CBBC will continue their ambition to break traditional production boundaries – to create great content aimed at young audiences, be that audio, video and text, on their preferred device.

Taking place from 4-7pm each week, the show will replace the long-running Sunday slot of The Official Chart that from 10th July moves to a Friday. This is to coincide with the global music industry’s move to a new co-ordinated international release day for new music.

Cel made his Radio 1 debut in 2013, standing in for Dan and Phil on Radio 1’s Request Show. As well as his presenting role on CBBC’s Friday Download, Cel has held acting positions in a number of programmes including Waterloo Road and Homefront. Cel also presents The CBBC Official Chart which will be moving to Fridays from September and will be broadcast live from Radio 1, during The Official Chart with Greg James (4-6pm).

Cel says: “Having grown up listening to the likes of Chris Moyles and the legendary Zane Lowe, joining the Radio 1 family is both a privilege and an honour! The best station on national radio has been responsible for introducing me to so much incredible and varied music over the years, I just hope I can return the favour and help make those car journeys a little more memorable for the listeners with a mix of fun, top tunes and a little bit of cheeky chat!”

Ben Cooper says: “Radio 1 and CBBC are changing the way radio and TV work together to create great content for young new music fans on their radio and phone. Cel has proven how influential he is to young audiences and I can’t wait for him to start.”

Cheryl Taylor, Controller CBBC, says: “This is a fabulous opportunity for Cel and another great collaboration for CBBC and Radio 1. Our audience have a strong rapport with Cel and the new Sunday show is the perfect way for them to share their love of music with him as well as building on the launch of the CBBC Official Chart Show.”
